CAB-381-20 is a high molecular weight cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) polymer. It is used as a film former and additive in solvent-based coatings.
CAB-381-20 is a mixed cellulose ester with moderate butyryl content and high viscosity. It is commonly used as a film former or as an additive in solvent-borne coatings to improve leveling, gloss, UV resistance, and durability. CAB-381-20 is soluble in a wide range of common organic solvents and is compatible with most common resins and plasticizers. CAB-381-20 is the ideal film former for applications that require enhanced appearance and reliable performance like automotive coatings, wood coatings, and lacquers. CAB-381-20 is also commonly used in nail polish as it provides superior stability when compared to other film formers like nitrocellulose. When CAB-381-20 is used as a film former in nail polish formulations it allows for faster drying and fewer applications that similar formulations with nitrocellulose. In addition, a cost savings can be realized by using CAB-381-20 in nail polish as the same durability seen with a lower molecular weight polymer can be achieved at a lower addition rate.
