Capstone™ FS-83
Capstone™ FS-83 is a solvent-based, partially fluorinated, coating additive that is used to improve wetting, leveling, and repellency in solvent-borne coatings.
Capstone™ FS-83 is a partially fluorinated acrylic copolymer that is used as additive in solvent-based paints and coatings to reduce surface tension. This reduction in surface tension allows for better wetting, leveling and spreading of the coating across the substrate and leads to a reduction of surface defects like cratering, pinholes, fish-eyes, and orange peel. In addition, when cured into a film Capstone™ FS-83 provides improved oil and water repellency. This is a useful property for wax and varnish formulations. Capstone™ FS-83 is available commercially as a 35% solids solution in butyl acetate. It is compatible with wide range of resins types and can be added directly to an existing paint formulation or diluted to working concentration with an appropriate solvent.
Note: All samples and purchases of Capstone for new projects and applications must first be evaluated for approval by ChemPoint and Chemours.

Features & Benefits
Improves wetting and leveling to eliminate craters, pinholes, fisheyes, and orange peel Compatible with many solvent-based waxes and polishes Improves water and oil repellency of dried film Improved dispersion stability REACH compliant Listed on TSCA inventory
Problems Solved
Stains to surfaces caused by exposure to oily substances and dirt. Poor wetting of solvent based coatings. Surfaces defects of coatings caused by high surface tension. Poor penetration of waxes and polishes on wood surfaces.
Applications
Capstone™ FS-83 provides significant improvements to solvent based formulations even at low use rates. In most coating applications only 0.02-0.1% actives is required to eliminate surface defects and improve water and oil repellency of the dried film.
Capstone® fluorosurfactants & fluororepellents were some of the first short-chain alternatives commercialized so Chemours has lots of experience helping their customers reformulate.
Capstone™ fluorosurfactants and repellents were introduced as sustainable replacements that meet the goals of the U.S. EPA 2010/15 PFOA Stewardship Program. They are based on short-chain molecules that cannot break down to PFOA or PFOS in the environment.
