Fluorosurfactant & Repellent Transition Guide

Have You Used Zonyl® Fluorosurfactants And Repellents In The Past?

Zonyl® fluorosurfactant and repellent grades were discontinued between 2009 and 2014. Chemours Capstone™ fluorosurfactants and repellents were introduced as replacements that meet the goals of the U.S. EPA 2010/15 PFOA Stewardship Program. Capstone™ is based on short-chain molecules that cannot break down to PFOA or PFOS in the environment. It has since been used in various applications to provide similar quality and functionality that formulators enjoyed using Zonyl®. Such applications include coatings, inks, adhesives, hard surface cleaners, and sealers.

WHICH CAPSTONE™ PRODUCT(S) SHOULD YOU TEST?

Capstone™ fluorosurfactants and repellents are not necessarily a one-to-one replacement for Zonyl® products, so you may need to test more than one grade. Below is a guide on the best starting place for surfactant and repellent grades that match closest. Some formulations may need to be adjusted slightly due to chemical differences. For the best performance matching, please reach out to us here to discuss your application.

REFORMULATION GUIDANCE

When considering a Capstone™ fluorosurfactant or repellent offset to Zonyl®, note that the percent actives as supplied can differ. Therefore, when evaluating a surfactant or repellent replacement in an existing formulation, calculate the concentration based on the active ingredient amount. Testing at least three different Capstone™ concentrations near or above the previous Zonyl® concentration is recommended to find the optimal concentration that yields maximum performance.
