Capstone™ FS-81
Capstone™ FS-81 is a water-based fluoropolymer that is used as a coating additive to improve wetting, stain resistance, and dirt pickup resistance.
Capstone™ FS-81 is a partially fluorinated polymeric coating additive that enhances the oil repellency and dirt pick-up resistance to improve cleanability of water-based paints. The improvement in oil and stain resistance provided by Capstone™ FS-81 make it an ideal additive for "easy clean" latex paint applications. Capstone™ FS-81 is used in very small amounts (0.07-0.3% active ingredient depending on application) and can provide a cost savings when used to replace multiple other additives in a formulation. Capstone™ FS-81 is available commercially as 33% solids emulsion that can dispersed directly into paint formulations or diluted to working concentration with water.
Note: All samples and purchases of Capstone for new projects and applications must first be evaluated for approval by ChemPoint and Chemours.
Specifications
Appearance: Off-white to yellow liquid Use Rate: (active ingredient) 0.1–0.2% 0.1–0.3% 0.07–0.1% Density: 1.08 g/mL Flash Point: >200 °F (93 °C) Composition: 33% active ingredient Foam: FS-81 has very low foam and does not cause additional foam in coating systems. Odor: Faint methyl isobutyl ketone odor Solubility: Dispersible directly in latex paint. The product can be diluted with water and has limited solubility in polar solvents. Shelf Life: Three years after production under normal storage conditions
Primary Chemistry: Fluoropolymer
Features & Benefits
Low sheen Improves oil contact angles on interior, flat finish, Easy Clean latex coatings Improved cleanability of oily, dirt-based stains, such as dirty handprints, and other household stains Improved performance with dirt pickup resistance (DPR). Does not interfere with re-coat adhesion and does not affect water repellency Low Foaming
Problems Solved
Dirt and dust pick up of paints and coatings. Damage to coatings caused by exposure to oil. Poor stain resistance of architectural coatings. Interference of re-coat adhesion caused by silicone based products.
Applications
The recommend use rate of Capstone™ FS-81 is highly dependent on the specific coating system and the properties that need to be achieved. The use rates below provides guidance based on the properties desired.
Capstone™ FS-81 is most often used in low sheen latex paints to improve oil repellency and to improve washability of dirt and stains. To achieve maximum performance it is recommended to minimize oil attracting additives and excess surfactants in the formulation.
