Armeen® 18D, Molten is a distilled primary amine with a chemical structure featuring an 18-carbon hydrophobic tail. It is used as a film-forming amine for corrosion-inhibition coatings and mold release applications.
Armeen® 18D, Molten is a distilled octadecylamine (CAS number 124-30-1) derived from coconut oil, soybean oil, and tallow. It is offered in a liquid state at room temperature. It features a long, 18-carbon atom chain and is typically used as a filming amine, thickener, and boundary lubricant. As a primary amine, it is partially to completely soluble at room temperature in solvents such as methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and kerosene.
In coating applications, Armeen® 18D forms a lubricious film that repels water and imparts an organophilic characteristic. This helps protect from corrosion when applied to metal surfaces. In rubber compounding applications, Armeen® 18D is an ideal processing aid for elastomers that also provides excellent mold release properties. As Armeen® 18D is cationic, it can also impart an organophilic character to inorganic pigments, making it an ideal pigment wetting and grinding aid. The cationic nature of Armeen® 18D makes it useful as a textile finishing agent that adsorbs to organic materials, such as wool, cotton, and rayon. This amine has broad FDA approvals and can be used in applications that require food contact.
