LUDOX® TMA is an anionic colloidal silica designed to be stable over a broad pH range. It is used to prepare ethyl silicate–silica hybrid binders that create slurries used in casting.
LUDOX® TMA is a slightly acidic, aqueous dispersion of negatively charged silica particles with an average particle size of 22 nanometers. It is a unique type of colloidal silica in that it is not stabilized by a counterion like other LUDOX® grades. LUDOX® TMA is stable in a pH range of 4–10, a much broader range than most colloidal silica. This makes it a versatile chemical tool for formulators working with both acidic and alkaline formulation conditions.
LUDOX® TMA is often used to prepare hybrid-type binders composed of ethyl silicate and colloidal silica for ceramic slurries used in precision investment casting applications. It is stable in extreme temperatures and can also be used as a binder for ceramic materials used in refractory applications.
LUDOX® TMA may also be used in coating formulations, where it serves as a useful material to provide surface modification and increase the coefficient of friction.
