LUDOX® HS-40 is an alkaline colloidal silica that offers a good balance between high binding strength and stability in coating and refractory applications.
LUDOX® HS-40 is an alkaline, 40% solids dispersion of silica with a particle size of 12 nanometers. The silica particles in this grade of colloidal silica are rich in silanol functional groups and carry a negative charge that is stabilized with sodium. The large surface area and surface functionality of LUDOX® HS-40 particles make it an effective binder of metals, oxides, siliceous materials, and polymers with reactive functional groups.

LUDOX® HS-40 acts as an inorganic glue in ceramic applications by binding siliceous materials and metals to improve the cohesive strength of formed ceramic shapes.
LUDOX® HS-40 is useful in water-based coating formulations, where the silica particles become an integral part of the latex film to improve durability, antiblocking, and antisoiling properties.
In water-based adhesives, LUDOX® HS-40 particles promote adhesion to a range of inorganic surfaces, like metal and glass, while improving durability.
LUDOX® HS-40 is an excellent source of silica for concrete densifiers. The nanoparticles of amorphous silica in LUDOX® HS-40 easily penetrate porous concrete. As a result, the density and hardness of the concrete are increased.
