KATHON™ LX 1.5%
KATHON™ LX 1.5% is an isothiazolinone-based preservative used to protect polymers, coatings, adhesives, and pigments. KATHON™ LX 1.5% is effective against bacteria and fungi at a low use rate, making it an excellent economical alternative to many other preservatives.
Industrial microbicides are a collection of in-can and dry-film preservatives appropriate for a wide variety of industrial applications. KATHON™ is a legacy brand for a line of isothiazolinone preservatives supplied globally by the largest chemical manufacturers and now manufactured by LANXESS.
KATHON™ LX 1.5% is an effective CMIT/MIT in-can preservative for aqueous systems with a pH below 8.5, extending the shelf life of a product in its wet state. The preservative is also highly compatible with other in-can and dry-film preservatives where fungal or mold protection is required.
KATHON™ LX 1.5% is EPA registered and recommended as a preservative for water-based latex paints, aqueous industrial coatings, polymer latices, and dispersed pigments. It also controls bacteria and fungi in kaolin clay, titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and others.
KATHON™ LX 1.5% offers broad-spectrum-activity antimicrobial protection, excellent physical and chemical compatibility, and low toxicity at recommended use levels. Its low dosage provides formulators with an economical, effective, and environmentally acceptable alternative to other commercial biocides.
Specifications
Physical state: Liquid Color: Light blue to light green Odor: Mild, inoffensive odor pH: 2–4 Melting point: −3.00°C (26.60°F) Relative vapor density (air = 1): 0.6200 Relative density (water = 1): 1.0200 Primary Chemistry: 5-Chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one/2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CMIT/MIT)
Broad-spectrum activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria Controls growth of fungi, yeast, and mold in liquid formulations Economical preservative compared to other preservation chemistries Cost-effective due to its low use levels Suited for formulations below pH 8.5 Compatible with surfactants and emulsifiers regardless of their ionic nature Low toxicity, no VOC contribution, and formaldehyde free EPA registered: KATHON™ LX 1.5% (EPA Reg. No. 707-134)
Problems Solved
Contamination or spoilage issues in paints, coatings, adhesives, and building materials Limited protection against bacteria or fungi High VOC and fast degradation of biocides in different coating compositions Economically prohibitive cost of in-can preservatives
Applications
Adhesives, paints and coatings, latices, dispersed pigments, and building materials
LANXESS Microbial Control offers a vast array of antimicrobial and preservative solutions, with approved end-uses in HI&I, Building & Construction, Coatings, Inks, Adhesives & Agriculture.
What are the microbial control chemistries available for cleaning products in the market today? What are the factors and criteria that determine the preservative performance and stability in a formulation?
Consumers expect to buy products that are effective and safe. Preservatives are vital components of cleaning products. However, there are questions raised about their safety and effectiveness. In collaboration with IFF and HCPA. We tried to answer some of these questions in this article.
