POLYOX™ Water-Soluble Resins

POLYOX™ Water-Soluble Resins are nonionic polyethylene oxide (PEO) polymers with molecular weights ranging from 100,000 to 8,000,000, depending on the grade. Polyethylene oxide is a thermoplastic polymer produced by the heterogeneous polymerization of ethylene oxide. It is occasionally referred to as polyethylene glycol or polyoxyethylene. POLYOX™ is commercially available as a white, free-flowing powder that is completely soluble in water. The viscosity and rheological properties of solutions containing POLYOX™ vary based on the molecular weight of the polymer and the concentration in the solution. Solutions of POLYOX™ are viscoelastic with a pseudoplastic rheology. This is because the polyethylene oxide polymer chains have relatively high molecular weights and readily bind water. High–molecular weight grades of POLYOX™ produce solutions with high degrees of viscoelasticity and pseudoplasticity. 

The unique properties of POLYOX™ Water-Soluble Resins make them useful binders and additives in a variety of industries, such as agriculture, coatings, electronics, inks, mining, and paper. The viscoelastic property of POLYOX™ mentioned earlier helps control the formation of mists when used in agricultural spray and metalworking fluid formulations. When used as a thermoplastic binder, POLYOX™ will form a film that is soluble in water. This is useful for creating water-soluble seed tape and manufacturing water-soluble packaging films. High–molecular weight grades of polyethylene oxide adsorb readily onto silica- and clay-based substrates. As such, POLYOX™ is an excellent flocculant for water treatment applications and a highly effective retention aid for paper manufacturing. The pseudoplastic nature that POLYOX™ imparts to formulations also makes it a useful additive for paints and coatings. It allows formulations to be easily sprayed or applied to overhead or vertical surfaces while preventing dripping or sagging.
