Eastman cellulose acetate propionates (CAPs) are naturally derived binders, cobinders, and additives originating from cellulose. Like Eastman's cellulose acetate butyrates (CABs), they are mixed cellulose esters that contain acetate but include propionate content instead of butyryl content. Cellulose acetate propionates are characterized by performance properties similar to cellulose acetates, combined with the high-solubility and broad-compatibility attributes of CABs.
Since cellulose acetate propionate contains no butyrate content, it is preferred in applications that use cellulose acetate butyrates but require low odor. Thus, cellulose acetate propionate is commonly used in inks, overprint varnishes (OPVs), and paper and plastic coatings for food packaging applications. Increased block resistance, improved adhesion, fast solvent release, and nonyellowing characteristics can be achieved when used in these applications.
Three Eastman cellulose acetate propionate grades are available, each of which is slightly harder and has somewhat less compatibility than Eastman CABs. They vary in viscosity, molecular weight, hydroxyl content, and Tg. Propionate grades with higher hydroxyl content have good solubility in mixtures of alcohol and water, making them useful in flexographic inks and OPVs.

Eastman cellulose esters can be formulated into inks as the main film former, co-resin, or additive to improve appearance, performance, and productivity.
