CoatOSil™ Additives

Overview

Momentive CoatOSil™ additives available through ChemPoint are silicone products designed to replace fluorinated surfactant and repellent chemistry by providing excellent wetting, leveling, antiblocking, and repellency in various coating, paint, and ink formulations. These formulations are used in industries ranging from building and construction to packaging. Based on silicone–polyether block copolymers, CoatOSil™ additives provide powerful properties at low concentrations. The silicone–polyether chemistry of each grade is tuned to amplify wetting, leveling, slip, mar resistance, foaming, antiblocking, repellency, or a combination of these. Given this, ChemPoint's offering of CoatOSil™ products can be categorized into three types: surface-modifying additives, antiblocking and exterior coating additives, and masonry coating additives.

CoatOSil™ surface modifier additives, such as CoatOSil™ 1211C and CoatOSil™ 7001LC, are silicone surfactants that prioritize substrate wetting and improve flow and leveling. They are ideal for water-based and solvent-based coating and ink formulations where addition at use rates as low as 0.1 wt% greatly reduces surface tension while generating minimal foam. This makes them great replacements for fluorosurfactants. In water, for example, CoatOSil™ 1211C reduces solution surface tension to around 20.5 dynes per centimeter. These surface-modifying additives can help improve visual defects such as cratering, pinholing, orange peel, and fish eyes through their improvements to wetting, flow, and leveling, contributing to a high degree of distinctness of image. Adding CoatOSil™ even enables coating and ink films to develop on oil-contaminated substrates with smooth evenness.

CoatOSil™ antiblocking additives, such as CoatOSil™ SE 620, maximize the stain and scuff resistance of water-based coatings while increasing the contact angle, water beading, and resistance to weathering. These additives are nonyellowing and are, therefore, ideal for use in applications such as exterior architectural paints that require high gloss and scrub resistance. At use rates as low as 0.5 wt%, they also reduce the coefficient of friction and dirt pickup. They also help provide similar benefits to the CoatOSil™ surface-modifying additives, providing equal or better wetting, antiblocking, and hydrophobicity performance than additives based on PFAS.

CoatOSil™ masonry coating additives, such as CoatOSil™ 2059, are silicone emulsions best used in sealer applications, where they act as strong repelling agents. They improve oleophobicity and stain resistance in water- and solvent-based sealers for porous and nonporous hard surfaces. Their performance in terms of water repellency at use rates as low as 1 wt% is strong enough to produce water beading in formulations in as few as two minutes after application. Outstanding resistance to staining by condiments and household liquids is also achieved upon full cure, providing the characteristic performance high-quality sealers are known for. These additives also impart very high resistance to weathering.
