Zinc PYRION™ Powder is a solid, powder form of zinc pyrithione preservative (CAS No. 13463-41-7) that provides antimicrobial protection in a wide variety of industrial applications.
Zinc PYRION™ is a zinc pyrithione (CAS No. 13463-41-7) chemical preservative (also called pyrithione zinc, ZPT, ZnPT, or ZnP) that protects against unwanted microbial growth and degradation. Zinc PYRION™ Powder grade is the concentrated off-white solid powder form of zinc pyrithione and has low solubility in water. Zinc PYRION™ 48% Liquid is the dispersed version of zinc pyrithione powder in water and an alternative option for water-based applications that desire a zinc pyrithione antimicrobial.
Zinc pyrithione is a highly effective broad-spectrum antimicrobial that inhibits the growth of fungi, bacteria, and algae. It is particularly effective in dry film antifungal applications. Additionally, due to its low water solubility, zinc pyrithione powder is especially effective in applications that require low leaching and long-lasting protection. Zinc pyrithione powder is thermally stable at high temperatures and does not begin decomposing until 240 Celsius. Zinc pyrithione is stable between pH 4 and 9.5. When in contact with heavy metal ions, such as iron and copper-based chemicals, zinc pyrithione can cause discoloration due to a chemical process called transchelation. Zinc pyrithione also is sensitive to light and strong oxidizing and reducing agents.
Zinc PYRION™ is approved for use as a chemical biocide for a wide range of both indoor and outdoor industrial applications susceptible to microbial attack. Common and approved applications for Zinc PYRION™ biocide include textiles, construction materials, paints, adhesives, plastics, caulks, sealants, and marine anti-fouling paints.
Typical treat rates vary by application, but are typically no more than 0.5 wt% for coatings applications. We recommend testing several levels (for example 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 ppm) to test the efficacy of protection. Contact a technical representative for more information and to confirm the recommended treat rate for your specific application. Testing is available through Janssen's laboratory for several industry-standard tests.
Zinc PYRION™ is not an approved active ingredient through ChemPoint for personal care and cosmetic grade applications, which include dandruff shampoo and hair care, bar soaps, cosmetics, and skin care products.
