Zinc PYRION™ 48% MPF is an aqueous dispersion of zinc pyrithione antimicrobial that is highly effective for water-based applications where low-leaching and long-term protection are required.
Zinc PYRION™ 48% MPF is a micronized aqueous suspension of zinc pyrithione (pyrithione zinc, zn-pyrithione, ZnPT, ZnP) in water. Zinc pyrithione has low water solubility so this dispersed version allows for easier dissolution and handling for water-based applications. Zinc pyrithione exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and inhibits the unwanted growth of fungi, yeast, mold, gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and algae. Zinc pyrithione is low leaching for longer-term protection and heat stable to 240°C (464°F). Zinc pyrithione can transchelate in the presence of heavy metals, such as iron and copper, causing discoloration of the treated fluid. Zinc pyrithione is also sensitive to light and strong oxidizing and reducing chemicals.
Zinc PYRION™ 48% MPF is approved as an antimicrobial agent for a wide range of applications, including industrial adhesives, caulks and sealants, grouts and patching compounds, latex paints and coatings, joint compounds and wood fillers, rubbers and thermoplastic resins, building materials, laundered fabrics, and adhesives used for food packaging. Zinc pyrithione is compatible with most common polymers. Treat rates for zinc pyrithione differ by composition, application and susceptibility to microbial attack. It is recommended to test biocide levels at multiple treat rates (for example, 3000, 4000, and 5000 ppm) to gauge efficacy in particular applications. Industry-standard laboratory testing is available from Janssen to help with formulation questions.
Zinc PYRION™ 48% MPF is not an approved chemical through ChemPoint for personal care and cosmetic grade applications which include anti-dandruff shampoo and skin care products.
