POLYOX™ WSR 303
POLYOX™ WSR-303 is a high molecular weight, water-soluble poly(ethylene oxide) polymer. It is used as a binder in ceramics and an additive to reduce the frictional drag of water.
POLYOX™ WSR-303 is a nonionic, water-soluble poly(ethylene oxide) polymer with a molecular weight of 7,000,000. It will form a solution with a viscosity of 7,500–10,000 cPs when added to water at 1 wt%. Like other high molecular weight POLYOX™ water-soluble resins, it is an excellent nonionic flocculant for thickening mining and wastewater applications. It may also be used as a film-forming resin in water-soluble coating, ink, or adhesive applications.
POLYOX™ WSR-303 also works well as a binder for ceramics, where it greatly improves the green strength of ceramic parts. Due to its pseudoplastic rheology, the extrusion pressure of ceramics is dramatically decreased. POLYOX™ WSR-303 will also reduce the frictional drag of water by about 80% when used in very small volumes (5–200 ppm), making it an ideal additive for firefighting solutions and storm sewer drainage. This frictional drag also makes POLYOX™ WSR-303 useful in agricultural spray solutions, where the polymer helps to prevent spray drift to unintended plants or areas. POLYOX™ WSR-303 resin has very low toxicity and does not cause irritation or sensitivity.
Soluble in water High binding efficiency Cross-linkable resin Viscoelastic and thermoplastic polymer Low toxicity Nonionic polymer Increases lubricity Imparts pseudoplasticity Biodegradable polymer
Problems Solved
Misting and drifting of aqueous solutions caused by the frictional drag of water Use of nonbiodegradable polymers in agricultural applications Turbulent frictional drag in firefighting fluids and storm sewer drainage Ceramic defects due to poor green strength of unfired parts Damage to ceramic extrusion equipment caused by extrusion pressures
