SeaSpen® IN Carrageenan
SeaSpen® IN is an industrial carrageenan hydrocolloid derived from seaweed and used as a thickener and gelling agent for water-based solutions.
SeaSpen® IN is a naturally derived iota-carrageenan extracted from sustainably harvested Eucheuma spinosum red seaweed. Solutions of SeaSpen® IN can be produced by dispersing the polymer in cold water and then heating the dispersion above the solubility temperature. This leads to the development of a soft gel that is freeze-thaw stable upon cooling. At low addition rates, solutions containing SeaSpen® IN will not undergo gelling. In this case, SeaSpen® IN functions as a thixotropic rheology modifier. When added to industrial formulations based on dispersions and emulsions, such as coatings, inks, or agrochemical sprays, SeaSpen® IN helps increase stability and prolong storage life. These properties make SeaSpen® IN carrageenan an example of sustainable chemistry that can replace thickeners and gelling agents derived from fossil fuels.
