LUDOX® LS
LUDOX® LS is an alkaline colloidal silica with a 12-nanometer particle size. It is formulated to contain lower sodium counterion levels than LUDOX® HS grades.
LUDOX® LS is a 30% solids aqueous dispersion of 12 nm surface-modified silica. It is formulated to a lower pH than the HS grades of LUDOX® and contains fewer sodium stabilizing ions, making it particularly useful in applications where sodium can be detrimental. LUDOX® LS also has good compatibility in solutions that contain organic solvents.
LUDOX® LS is typically used as a binder in ceramic fiber refractory manufacturing to increase thermal shock resistance and durability to ceramic parts. It can also be used as a binder in water-based coating formulations that contain organic cosolvents. Here, LUDOX® LS provides added durability to dried films and improves heat and chemical resistance.
In adhesive applications, LUDOX® LS increases adhesion to glass and metal surfaces and increases shear strength, improving the durability of the cured adhesive.
LUDOX® LS is also an excellent source of silica for concrete densifier formulations. This property provides a performance advantage over other types of silica in this application. The small particle size of the amorphous silica in LUDOX® LS allows it to react with hydroxides by easily penetrating the porous surface of concrete, increasing its density and hardness.
