LUDOX® HS-30
LUDOX® HS-30 is a colloidal silica with an average particle size of 12 nm. It is a binder in casting and ceramics applications and a cobinder to increase abrasion resistance in latex paint and coatings.
LUDOX® HS-30 is a 30% solids, alkaline dispersion of anionic amorphous silica. This colloidal silica is characterized by high versatility as a good binder or surface modifier because it contains silica particles that are relatively intermediate in size.
LUDOX® HS-30 is formulated to be an optimal binder in investment casting and ceramics. It is commonly used to bind inorganic materials, including metals and oxides like aluminum, iron, and ceramic fibers used in ceramics and refractory manufacturing. Incorporation of LUDOX® HS-30 into ceramic slurries improves thermal and mechanical shock resistance.
LUDOX® HS-30 is also used in water-based coatings and adhesives to improve durability. The silica particles in LUDOX® HS-30 surround the polymer particles in water-based latex formulations and become an integral part of the latex film upon coalescence. The use of this colloidal silica in coatings and adhesives has also been shown to improve cohesive strength and, in some cases, adhesion of the formulation to a variety of substances, including metal and glass.
The electrostatic nature of LUDOX® HS-30 makes it an efficient flocculant for wastewater and papermaking applications, where positively charged contaminants must be removed. This functionality also proves useful in beverage fining applications, where food-grade versions of this colloidal silica are available for use.
