LUDOX® AM-FS
LUDOX® AM-FS is a freeze-stable grade of colloidal silica used as a binder in ceramic, water-based adhesive, and latex paint applications. It is also stable in a wide range of pH.
LUDOX® AM-FS is a 28% aqueous dispersion of colloidal silica with a particle size of 12 nm. LUDOX® AM-FS particles have a very high surface area. The surface of these particles is rich in silanol groups, which makes it a highly reactive binder of metals, ceramics, and other inorganic materials. It is formulated to give broader pH stability than standard alkali-stabilized grades and can be incorporated into solutions with neutral to slightly acidic pH and yield a stable formulation. Because of its freeze-thaw stability, LUDOX® AM-FS is recommended for use in formulations or operations that exist in below-freezing temperatures.
Specifications
Silica content (wt%): 27–30 Specific surface area (m2/g): 198–258 pH: 8.6–9.3 Specific gravity (@ 25°C): 1.2 Particle charge: Negative Stabilizing counterion: Sodium Biocide (ppm): 500
Primary Chemistry: Colloidal Silica
Features & Benefits
Negative sols, anionic Small particle size Narrow particle size distribution Broad pH stability (4–10) High reactivity and excellent binding strength Outstanding formulation stability Freeze stable Good antislip properties on surfaces Delustrant Reinforcing agent
Problems Solved
Poor stability of alkaline-stabilized colloidal silica in acidic formulations Freezing of water-based formulations when used in cold-weather climates
Applications
LUDOX® AM-FS is useful as an additive in functional coatings and adhesives as a reinforcing agent, binder, and surface modifier. It can also promote the adhesion of coatings and adhesives onto inorganic materials, such as metal and glass, where durability and abrasion resistance is also increased. The freeze stability of LUDOX® AM-FS makes it ideal as a raw material source of silica or in concrete-densifier formulations that are applied in below-freezing temperatures. LUDOX® AM-FS is also preferred in ceramic applications where silica is needed as a binder to improve cohesive strength.
