METHOCEL™ J75MS is a surface-treated hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) thickener. It will yield a viscosity of 75,000 cPs at 2% in water. The surface treatment delays hydration and is typically triggered with a pH adjustment.
METHOCEL™ J75MS is a surface-treated HPMC thickener and rheology modifier offered as a powder. Its cellulose polymer has a high degree of hydroxypropyl substitution and a low degree of methoxy substitution. When added at 2% to water, METHOCEL™ J75MS provides thickening to yield a solution with 75,000 cPs of viscosity.
Surface-treated grades of METHOCEL™, like J75MS, contain cellulose polymers cross-linked with glyoxal. This allows for METHOCEL™ J75MS to be dispersed more easily and completely in aqueous solutions prior to hydration, which is typically triggered by a pH adjustment.
METHOCEL™ J75MS imparts shear-thinning rheology and has good solvent compatibility and outstanding pH stability, making it an ideal thickener, binder, and suspension agent in several applications, such as coatings, adhesives, and cleaners. When used in architectural latex paint formulations, the METHOCEL™ J75MS cellulose polymer controls viscosity and rheology and improves film durability, storage stability, and easier brush loading. Similarly, METHOCEL™ J75MS acts as a shear-thinning rheology modifier in cleaners to make formulations easily sprayable yet adhere well on vertical and overhead surfaces. The METHOCEL™ J75MS polymer also functions as a water-retaining agent, making it useful in tile adhesives, tape–joint compounds, mortars, and plasters where open time, workability, and strength properties are increased.
