AAEMA (acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate) is an acrylic monomer commonly used as a copolymer in coatings and adhesive applications.
AAEMA, also known as 2-(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate or AAEM, from Arxada (formerly Lonza), is an acetoacetate acrylic monomer typically used to produce acrylic resins for various coatings and adhesive applications. Acetoacetates have excellent cross-linking versatility and lower the resin glass transition temperature, decrease solution viscosity for higher-solids coatings, and improve adhesion for metal coatings. AAEMA has excellent hydrolytic stability and weatherability, low viscosity, and low water absorption. It promotes adhesion to various substrates, including metal, mineral, and wood surfaces. AAEMA can also replace styrene in the production of unsaturated polyesters and is used as a chemical intermediate in numerous applications.

Acrylic resin manufacturers solve for various issues, depending on the end application. These include high-color or yellowing polyester resin, which negatively impacts color-sensitive coating applications, such as gel coats. Monomers that raise the glass transition temperature or solution viscosity can be undesirable in certain applications, including low-VOC or high-solids coatings. Resins can also suffer from poor performance characteristics without the use of proper chemicals, such as poor water stability, weatherability, or adhesion properties.
